Celestial Voodoo

Winner of the "Documentary Award" at the 2015 Humanity Photo Awards, organised by CFPA and UNESCO.

Processione rituale Voodoo nell'acqua, Benin

In the equatorial region of Benin many religious beliefs live side by side, deeply different in both origin and ceremony.

Ganvié and Ouidah are singular places of spiritual coexistence, where the Celestial Church of Christ and voodoo tradition merge in the collective mystical imagination. The Voodoo Festival is held every January in Ouidah: an ancient tradition that gathers tribal chiefs, celebrants and thousands of faithful in a shared mystical fervour.

Battesimo per immersione nel fiume, Benin

At the same time, it is not unusual for other ancient ceremonies of Christian origin to take place in the same days. One of these is baptism by immersion, a rite marking conversion and admission into the celestial community.
