Marble Connection – Carrara, Italy

The quarrymen seem almost clumsy and some of them fat, they are no longer the heroes of the mountain, constantly in danger of life. This is thanks to new technologies, which make it possible to extract the raw material more easily. Mountains are plundered of their beauty at a double speed, under the pressure of wealthy Middle Eastern oilmen. 50 percent of the quarries are now owned by the Bin-Laden family, which they also sell to the rich Chinese market. A market that finds cheap labor in the big red country and takes the life of the local processing companies. The extraction activity makes the rivers of Massa-Carrara contaminated by ‘marmettola’, which cements the aquifers, transforming the natural courses of water and intensifying the flooding phenomenon. This is the panorama that hides behind the whiteness of unique Carrara marble. One of the symbols of Italian excellence that has turned into a dysfunctional and polluting machine, with little attention to resources and to consciously preserve them.
